Types/Applications of Photoacoustic Contrast Agents: A Review

Ultrasound imaging, one of the common diagnosis techniques, is frequently used since it safe, cost-efficient technique and real-time imaging can be conducted. However, various organs tissues reflect ultrasonic waves, which leads to difficulty in small biomolecules a low spatial resolution for deep-tissue images. As such, there have been significant advances photonics optical molecular probes recent years, photoacoustic (PA) tomography (PAT) has emerged as promising modality that overcome limitations ultrasound. PAT relies on effect, conversion absorbed energy into acoustic energy. Since fewer exhibit effect compared scattering or reflection ultrasound, employed generate high-resolution also number other advantages when conventional biomedical modalities such tomography, ultrasound computed positron emission magnetic resonance imaging. This review provides general overview contrast agents PAT, including organic, inorganic hybrid agents, describes their application. identifies current suggests future research directions development.
